Why you should travel the world with your children.
If we can do it, you can too! Before we left, we were disorganised (we still are!), nervous, but excited too.
I remember those first discussions and how impossible it seemed. What? Travel the world? With the kids?
What about disease? What about political instability? What about muggings and violent crime?
Are we mad?
Simply put...
No.
Every experience we've had has proved all these anxieties utterly unfounded.
Not only is travelling with kids much easier than we thought it would be, in many ways it's actually easier than travelling without them…
Yes, I do mean that. As one astute hostel owner in Guatemala explained to us, the local people see you and your family and think 'oh, they’re normal; they're like us; they have kids’. She didn't go on to say the flip side. But anyway our experiences over the last year and then some have borne this out. There's often an acceptance when you travel with children that you don't feel when travelling as a couple or a single person (not that I would advocate against travelling alone or as a couple), travel, whatever your circumstances. You only get one life and it's a fascinating world out here!
Travelling with kids opens a number of doors for you. People will go much further to help you. Doors will open much wider and with more warmth when you have kids in tow.
In short, if you're even half considering it, Do It!
Do it now before your kids go off and do it on their own without you!
Not only do you get a fantastic experience, but you get to share amazing times as a family and build lifetime memories with your children. As our argument goes: on your deathbed, no-one ever bemoans spending too much time with their children.
Do it and do it now!
Never has it been easier and more accessible to travel with children and remember this important, but oft overlooked fact: all these amazing destinations that you are planning on visiting, they have kids there too!
Not only does this mean playmates for your little loved ones but it means all those things you are worried about buying, you can get there (diapers/nappies, pacifiers/dummies, milk powder, clothes, shoes, mashed fruits, food, even toys). OK so if you end up in a tribal village in Eastern Papua New Guinea, you may struggle to get everything you would in a European/American supermarket but even in rural Asia, you will not struggle to get your needs met.
If you are lucky enough to be in the financial situation to allow it, then take advantage of it and go. Explore the world and take the kids!
